Endometriosis is a disease which is characterized by an unwanted growth of the inner lining of the uterus. Endometriosis is very common in woman in the age bracket of 30 to 40 years. It is normally not seen in post menopausal women. The inner lining of the uterus is shed after every menstrual period. In women suffering from endometriosis the endometrium is unable to exit from the body. This causes degeneration of tissues, and inflammation accompanied with pain. The growth of tissues hinders in the normal functioning of urinary bladder, intestine and other organs in the pelvic cavity. The symptoms are Dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, painful bowel movements, Heavy menstrual periods, infertility and nausea. Cysts are also seen in the endometrium. The rupturing of these cysts constitutes a surgical emergency. The cause of endometriosis is not clear. The probable cause could be an abnormal level of Estrogen.
